We go to movies and read books to divert our mind from the mundane and possible routine many of us get into as life rolls on, day after day, month after month. All of us need a break, and most of us find a variety of ways to make life more interesting.
Time travel in STORY opens up another dimension, and forces the audience to multi-task the two time periods and try to find the connection between the two.
Not only is it a way to make the plot more interesting, but it is a way for the audience to stay more focused as the overall journey becomes more complex.
The underlining message about time travel as part of entertainment is that the future may be affected by the past, and the past or present may have an impact on the future.
Remember, movies and books stimulate the audience to ask questions, and then tune into the next segment or part of the series that will answer the hanging chads, that may or may not be clear.
